occupied Palestinian territory: OPT, West Bank: Abd Alhaleem testimony, a beneficiary from Première Urgence's economic recovery programme

Source: Première Urgence
Country: occupied Palestinian territory

Alhaleem Hasan Abd Shamasneh is 46, he lives with his wife and 6 children in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (West Bank) in the village of Jayyus. This village is located 6 km from the green line (dividing Israel and the West Bank) counting 70% of farmers (1). Since the construction of the Separation Wall, farmers have no access to their land and therefore live in a very precarious way, Alhaleem Hasan Abd Shamasneh is one of them.

Since the Wall's construction, he can no longer access his land: "I lost all my lands, there were olive trees for a very long time, it was my main source of income." (See our contexte note ).

In May 2008, he was recruited as 1300 other Palestinians, by Première Urgence for the rehabilitation of public infrastructures. The remuneration he earned during the work enabled him to cover a part of his family needs.

His wife, Manal Akel, explains: "This morning my children have not eaten, we have nothing left. My 16 year old son even refused to go to school because he could not pay 1 euro for photocopies".

Today, 5580 vulnerable Palestian refugees do benefit from a better access to drinking water and from income generated by their work for the rehabilitation of public infrastructure (cash for work). 80 micro-enterprises are also supported by the distribution of professional kits giving the beneficiaries the tools necessary for their businesses (plumbing kit ...).

Note: (1) Data collected by the Palestinian organisation 'Stop the Wall'and confirmed by our teams during the exploratory mission.
