On 1st March 2010, Première Urgence launched the 5th project of shelter and water/sanitation networks rehabilitation for the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, funded by the European Commission of Humanitarian Aid. Following the exhaustive census of the national needs in these domains, in 2009, unsafe and unsanitary shelters and water networks will be made viable. Thus, almost all of these shelters will be rehabilitated (except for legal-issued cases). The encountered problems are mostly structural and hygienic: threats of collapsing, unsanitary or inexistent water rooms and bad weatherproofing make these shelters dangerous for the health or even life threatening for their inhabitants. The artisanal and out of age water networks, sometimes passing through black waters evacuation networks, are contaminated and the water non drinkable.
Roofs, kitchens, bathrooms rehabilitated by Première Urgence in Sikke gathering, Saida, between february and September 2009.These works will be done in 111 shelters in the Palestinian gatherings, in Saida, Beyrouth and Baalbek.. Moreover, the water filtration systems will be rehabilitated in the 5 Palestinian Red Crescent hospitals.
Besides, a pilot intervention will be implemented inside Ein el Hilweh Palestinian camp in Saida, also for the rehabilitation of 15 shelters, in support to UNRWA activities (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinians).
